I am pretty much a beginner and have been playing for about a few months now. I used to "try" and play when I was younger, but went in the Army and have not picked up a sax for 30 years. I have a Yamaha YTS-26 and plan on getting a higher end Yamaha after a year or so. I have been listening to vid's on many different of mouthpieces and decided to go on the Jody Jazz website and answer the 6 questions so I could see what mouthpiece they would recommend for me. To my surprise the "Jody Jazz Dude himself" responded to me in an email. He recommended a couple different ones. I responded back asking about the DV series, and he replied back that he would also recommend the DV series, but since I play a student model horn, he did not want to seem too forward. He also said it would sound great with a student horn and offered to let me try the DV as well as the others that he recommended. Out of all the vid's that I watched, the DV sounded the best to me, so I ordered one, and he shipped it next day for me.

He recommended the 7 and even though the biggest opening I ever played was a 6, he said the DV's are extremely free blowing, so I took his advice and ordered the 7. I got it yesterday and expecting it to be a little harder to play even with a number 2 reed, but OMG it was way easier than I expected, and the sound is amazing to me. Made my student horn sound better than a student horn IMO. Even though I'm just a beginner, this mouthpiece is making me want to play more which will make me a better player.

Plus when I get to the point of getting a pro level horn, I won't have to bother with a new mouthpiece... :)

A lot of people advised me not to worry about mouthpieces yet, but I'm compulsive by nature, so...

Jody is a very nice guy. I met him several years ago when he was still working out of his loft in NYC. Generally I've found their customer service to be very good whether talking to Jody or one of the other folks in the office there.

It doesn't surprise me you find the DV easy to play. The baffle and facing curve on that mouthpiece should make it very responsive especially in that tip opening. It may seem large compared to what you've been playing but for the way that piece is designed that's not a large tip at all. I had one for a couple years in an 8* for tenor and it was still too bright for me so I sold it but I've been playing DV on bari for many years and I really like it especially for funk stuff.

I had a very similar experience over 10 years ago when I ordered an Alto DV NY. Jody has been doing some great work and is making some phenomenal pieces. I would really like to try the DV and DV Chi on Tenor.
