I live in Denton but have spent a hell of a lot of time in Austin over the past few years. Some of my best friends are there.
My friends Steve Smith (who's still in the 512) and Wil Swindler (who's now in CO) had a fantastic group called the
Chamber Jazz Ensemble that used to include some of the really great Austin jazz players like Eli Haslinger and
Eddie Hobizal. Eddie is a world-class piano player; I think he actually took second or third place in the very first Thelonious Monk Competition. Which, in the words of Ron Burgundy, is "kind of a big deal." If you can find a night when Eddie's playing it would be way more than worth your while to check it out, and Eli is a great tenor player too. Paul White is another really great tenor player who lives there.
I'll be playing there with Snarky Puppy and Mingo Fishtrap this coming Saturday at the Parish, and... more importantly... we'll be opening for
Rudder, which is my FAVORITE BAND ON EARTH right now. Chris Cheek(!), Henry Hay, Tim Lefebvre, Keith Carlock... I might wet myself.
