Here's some recordings from my combo practice at the local community college. I'm playing tenor on them. Just wondering what you think. Thanks! http://www.4shared.com/folder/L4ImETFw/Jazz_Ensemble_May_3.html
Actually the trumpet player uploaded them, I just threw them up there. I don't play a chorus on Joy Spring, just the heads. I'm on tenor. I agree with you about the alto player. Check out the other tunes, I play on those ones.Man, 4shared is dead, please use dropbox or something.
I listened to joy spring : I don't think you have the changes down quite yet. No worries though, it's a challenging tune. You have a good rhythm section so let them fill in more and play meaningful stuff.
I think I'd like to hear a brighter tone from you too.
Which tune are you talking about? Not a very good recording so a little hard to tell. Sounds like the grace note/trill is beyond the trumpet player. Re-write this so that it's played without it, you won't miss it. Your tone and solo sound good but lacks confidence (could be partly your distance from the microphone keeps the level too low). The rhythm section is good and giving you a solid backing.
My recomendation is to make it simple, play it with feeling and conviction, and get a better set up for recording.
Oh, okay my bad.Actually the trumpet player uploaded them, I just threw them up there. I don't play a chorus on Joy Spring, just the heads. I'm on tenor. I agree with you about the alto player. Check out the other tunes, I play on those ones.
First tune Ceora. Head isn't tight with the trumpet (also alto?) flubbing the grace notes and trills. Also tuning issues when playing in unison.Which tune are you talking about?
Yeah it's definitely not the best take. We've played it better. Thanks for the feedback!First tune Ceora. Head isn't tight with the trumpet (also alto?) flubbing the grace notes and trills. Also tuning issues when playing in unison.
Yeah, I heard that too, I'm floating over the time a bit at times. Interesting you say Rollins, I don't really dig his playing. I'll have to think about that lol. I've been playing for about 3 1/2 years, I'm a senior in high school now. This band has been playing together since early February, and actually I think we've come really far from before. Thanks for the feedback!I listened to April : Nice Rollins tone man - still needs a little more focus and confidence imo but you're getting there... I think some of your lines could be more fluid and locked in with the rhythm section. The fact that the bass drum is so loud in the mix and your so soft is distracting though. LOL
Maybe you could have stated your part of the melody in a more confident way rhythmically. How long have you been playing? And how long has the combo been rehearsing?
