I've been digging his sound lately, especially on the "Le Saxophone Françaix" album. I know, from various videos and the album picture, that he uses a Selmer Metal Classic, but that's the extent of it. Does anyone have any information?

This mystery has previously been raised and solved. It's not a Selmer but a metal mouthpiece hand made by Georges Charron, former member of the Mule Quartet, at the end of the 1940s.

See especially post 8 here: http://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?39314-Help-Identify-Metal-Tenor-Mouthpiece

and this thread: http://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?46108-Daniel-Deffayet-question

Unfortunately the link to the Deffayet interview in the second thread is broken.

Deffayet can be seen playing the alto version of this mouthpiece here...

Thanks for the response.

Odd, I did so much trawling and must have missed this. I did know Deffayet played that mouthpiece but, huh. Ah well. So I conclude it was a Buffet SDA tenor with this custom Charron adjustable mouthpiece. Probably a lighter reed based on the sound.

It makes sense though, if you listen through the that album, his tone changes per song. This explains it, he's adjusting the lay of his mouthpiece based on the context of the music.
