Fellow aging players...
Are you afraid to oil your horns because you don't want to find out it's YOU that's slowing up and not your keywork???

No, I know it is me. There is no doubt. I listen to recordings from 50 years ago and marvel at the speed of my articulation, which was not fast for the time. Its fast to me now and I literally can't do it. I also have become painfully aware of a tendency to literally slow down - not really in meter, because I would get behind the band, but like not coming in with a snappy feel - more like being on the 1 instead of on the 'and' of 4. However, being conscious of it, I at least am still able to keep it in mind and push a little to get on top of the beat. Regardless, it is scary to realize these things. Funny things begin to happen after 75. But one thing that does not wane or degrade over time is the irresistible urge to buy new stuff! My last statement will probably be something like 'I swear I'm going to sell that VI and get something else.'

I agree with adamk. It's funny that you bring this up, and with all the online Multitrack Audio/Video stuff I've been doing recently, we (David Wright and I) actually have been tackling some pretty hard stuff (like Hartley). And while he might be able to in a few takes make things exactly where they are suppose to be (with the click track), when it comes to a fast section, I can actually see MY speed problem, it is ME lagging just a tad and it corresponds with my mental state as I play. I'm sure it's stroke related. All I can do is keep pluggin (and digitally manipulate:) when need be :) )

No, but I'm really scared of that sport coat in the closet that may tell me I've gained weight.

Not at all. I probably had more technique when I was younger but you don't need classical chops to play good jazz unless you're into the virtuoso thing. I think my ideas are simpler and better than when I was younger. technique has nothing to do with it.

It's not about speed. Nor equipment. About a decade ago I played with a gentleman in his 80's for about a year in a combo class. He played the most beautiful solos on his very old, nickel plated keys Buescher tenor.

He reminded me of Aubra Graves.

I wish to play like them when I reach that late age.
