I had a sudden burst of genius yesterday, as I was fiddling with my new/used iPod. Wouldn't it be great if there was a metronome program that goes on an iPod? For me, anyway, it would come in really handy. Through my research into the subject I've discovered that you can make timed click tracks of four beats or so in length and time it so that the repeat is in tempo. While this is better than nothing, it still lacks the functionality of a basic metronome. (I realize that I could just plug headphones into a metronome, just so we're clear.)
What do you think?

I've actually already got click tracks on my ipod in a playlist but, like I said, it still lacks what a metronome has--you can't accent every fourth/third beat, etc., and things like that.

Hi,

Check out iRocker, it's software for your iPod that includes a metronome (10 speeds) and some other goodies.

well if you could have the clicks it already makes play tempo wise and then you could possibly play around with accents. I mean it has a limited for of clicking why not try and exploit that? I am not a programmer alas I can't do it.

I found a metronome in the works for Rockbox (an alternative to the iPod OS). If you're into that and want the link I'll see if I can dig it up again. Just let me know. I've decided that I want to know how make my iPod a good tool for practice/performance. What programs/addons/accessories for iPod/mp3 players do you use/recommend?

I made a series of click tracks with Garageband, using the drum kit's bass drum and rim shots. Doesn't take much time once you found out where the different sounds are. Then you export it to your iPod.

Some of my click tracks are special in that they leave out every other measure or even two out of three measures. Good training for you time feeling.

I just decided today that I could not take iTunes anymore, the new version has this genius thing which makes suggestions - horrible - and worst of all you can no longer turn off the genre section in browsing. So i realized that apple are a bunch of satan worshippers and so deleted itunes and loaded up songbird the new mozzilla open source player for mac. Much better. And then, still not satisfied, i installed Rockbox on my ipod. It is one million times better and easier and funkier. And the metronome works well! I was using it today. And coz its open source you can write little plugins for it so i could envisage other music apps might happen too... a tuner would be great
