I just noticed this in band class a week ago and it's been puzzling me ever since. While doing whole tone exercises in concert C major, I hear this really high-pitched overtone, somewhat like a detuned fith about two octaves higher than the note I'm playing. I hear the overtone in my mouth, between the hard palette and the soft palette. I adjust my internal embouchure to voice each note in tune automatically now. Maybe that has something to do with it?

It sounds like a Wolf Interval, just two octaves higher than the note I'm playing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_interval
