I just listened to Charlie Parker's solo on Passport, and he's on the edge of a chirp for much of it. I think it contributes to the effectiveness of the performance, and have noticed this on many other recordings, so I'm wondering if it is intentional, much like a vocalist whose voice cracks to add soulfulness to a song, or just happens and becomes a free bonus. Anyone care to add some insight to the subject?
