I thought this might be of historical interest: John Coltrane, Jr., aspiring bassist, dies in a car crash at 17. What an awful tragedy for that family on top of the awful tragedy of their father's premature death.

To add to the family tragedy theme... I just learned that Alice's half brother, the jazz bassist Ernie Farrow, died in a swimming accident in 1969 at the age of 40, the same age her husband had died at two years earlier.

Used to live there and I still work in the area. The San Fernando Valley, suburbs of LA.
Extremely sad.
Unfortunately, bad accidents in the middle of night involving young drivers still a common occurrence.

Back in 1977, I visited Coltrane's grave. Looking for it, I asked a worker at the cemetery if he knew where it was and he asked if he was "some kind of musician".
I remember saying, yes, he was "some kind of musician".

As I said in the original post, I thought it might be of historical interest - it certainly is to me. I've known a long time that John Jr. died young, but I didn't know the details.
