This one doesn't suggest "melodies" to me, more like intervallic motives and rhythmic ideas.

Dumb question: have you listened to the original recording, or covers, to get ideas from those?

Yup, that's the one. I've listened to that recording, and the original a bunch. My main issue is that my ear isn't good enough to parse out what they are actually (obviously currently working on it). The solo selection basically just says "solo in E" and I was hoping for some suggestions of maybe some patterns/notes/scales to make my playing on it a little less stale

What is the problem? The rhythm and groove are very clear, build motives and rhythms on them. The scale is E pentatonic, the arrangement sounds modern and allows the use of side sliping in melody ( Out-in).

When improvising on a pedal you can use a few means to keep it interesting. I don't know what the root is (because i have no piano here and I lack absolite hear :)) bit lets's say it's some sort of Emin. Start by using just e minor pentatonic (1 b3 4 5 b7) or e min6 (1 b3 4 5 6) lookomg for different shapes. A good method to study skipping between the pentatonic degrees is explained by Jerry Bergonzi in his book on pentatonics. You can switch between pentatonics that are half step apart, before resolving back to your initial scale. This creates a lot of tension, and it's a technique that players like Kenny Garrett use a lot to play out over changes. You can the experiment with approach notes and enclosure around the notes of the chord (i try to play a long continuous 8notes line by approaching the chord tones to get the sound of that specific chord). Finally, pair triads always work well, try switching betwee Emin and F#min, Emin and D, Emin and B, for example.
