Hi I have been focused on traditional bebop on alto and tenor as well as a Getz type sound. I have used standard Link and Meyer set ups / sound concept.

However, I will be playing on occasion with a friend who sings like Amy Wine house. Which mouthpieces and reeds would you use to play behind her and solo in this style? Just a fun quesion I thought I would put out their for folks.

Thanks and look forward to hearing your thoughts. In this case, the cheaper the better - but open to any ideas.

Use what you have.

I doubt that Stanley Turrentine thought about changing mouthpieces when he recorded with Diana Krall.

Either of your alto or tenor setups should sound great.

I’d listen to a lot of Amy Winehouse and work through some complementary low key solos, duos. If your friend has anywhere close to the talent of Amy Winehouse, should be a fun gig! I’d also give a fresh listen to The Girl From Ipanema. Enjoy!

Dry, they are right - play like you want to play. I can definitely imagine Stan Getz with Amy. He never changed his mouthpiece or style for anybody - he just played stuff that fit, even with Huey Lewis on 'Small World'. Changing these critical components is a good way to lose your core sound. You need to bond with one mouthpiece, and the reed will become obvious. That is, you will find the reed that works with the mouthpiece and your sound concept. I have been long-term on two mouthpieces - 23 years on a Brilhart Level Air and 22 years on a DG 'King Curtis'.

Did you ever hear Sonny Rollins play with the Rolling Stones?

He played the same set up he was playing with everything else at that time, and sounded just like himself.

Phil Woods played the same set up with Benny Goodman and Quincy Jones as he did with Billy Joel and Steely Dan.

Just be yourself......ALWAYS.

Yes she is pretty stellar. She is a friend and is letting me sit in on a tune or two. I have been checking the Girl from Ipanema by AW and it so hip...Love the drums on it. The other one I really like is Moody's Mood. But I still have to check in whith her to see what she thinks.

thread are not easily deleted by the staff which keeps them unless there are very good reasons to do so.
Yah, right. Tell that to the Charlie Parker thread; that was appalling, there was so much more to be said there.

I think if you're gonna think Getz and Astrid, you may as well make the leap to Lester and Billie; can't top that. If your friend was telling you don't be jumping in and destroying everything, she may have been thinking of this guy. Way to wreck a mood, buddy.

I didn't follow that thread but generally threads are only deleted if people started to call each other names, I have had a look it went for several pages, at least 7 so, quite a bit must have been said there.

That thread went the same direction of this other one before which was also closed but is still there to be read (hence not many threads are erased unless something really nasty happened)

I learn the melodies on my instrument so that I know what notes the singer is singing and that helps me blend easily.
that is pretty much my approach too, fill ins and backings, then we share solos with the piano player

I had to learn to play very soft , at times, certainly with backings, that has been a very good thing to learn control
