There seems to be no consistancy with the dates associated with Couf serial numbers. World Wide Sax has a Superba I alto with a 94*** serial number listed as having been made between 1965 and 1968. PM Woodwinds has a Superba I tenor with a 88*** serial number listed as a 1974. Other sites show horns of these serial number ranges to be post 1980. So what's the deal?

I have a Superba I with a 84*** serial number. I really don't care its age - it plays great - but I am confused and curious.

If it's any help and any reality to it, I bought my Couf Superba soprano new in 1976-the serial # is 76XXX. I've read that the first 2 numbers of the serial # is the year the horn(s) were built and that jives with my experience.

Thomas:

That makes sense - thanks. The folks at PM Woodwinds really know their stuff and that is why I was a bit confused.
