I think it was a early Florida Link, like no USA, bla blah.
99% percent sure he did NOT use a baffle...a few of my friends were on the band at different times, in the 80s, on 2nd tenor, I could ask them to corroborate, but I am very sure he didn't have a baffle in there.

If you look at his mouth, he's doing everything right, thats why he can get all those different sounds. Two words: Joe Allard

You can do this on a Link without a baffle, thats whey they're great mpcs.
It can be done, friends, it can be done.
If I can do it, so can you.

Awesome thanks for posting that clip! Vintage early 80's performance is my guess. I got to hear Steve do his feature with Buddy a couple of times, and it as young teenager just starting to get into jazz, it was thrilling. Besides Buddy himself, the highlight of the show for me. I remember wishing I could get lessons with him, but the money was not there and my family was not musical and there was no concept of getting private lessons for the kid. Hey he's in band in school thats plenty. Thats the thing about Links, depending on the vintage and individual, they can be tubby and dark or very bright.

Clearly Steve got himself a truly great Link there, and he sounds awesome! I would assume there is no added baffle in there. Hearing Steve in this clip gives you an idea why people are willing to pay 500-1000 or more for the right vintage tenor Otto Link. You ain't gonna get that sound out of a new stock Otto Link no matter how hard you try. But to paraphrase Kenny G, at the end of the day, you are still gonna sound like you.

I would be a surprised if there is a baffle in there. It just sounds like a link with a harder reed to me. A baffle would make it more bright I would think.
I agree. If you listen to his studio recordings, he sounds pretty much the same, even though he's obviously older (and grayer!)

On this video he gets like, every sound you can think of out of that Link. Does anyone know what Link he played and if there might be an added baffle?

That was fantastic. I loved everything he did, but especially the blues playing. That's how it's done! But, imo, it didn't have that much to do with the Link. I'm sure he'd sound just as good on any number of different mpcs.

Both the live and studio recording used heavily colored mics IMO which may contribute at least partly to that sound (dynamics pointed towards the bell).

I thought Joe Allard's deal was the fixed embouchure?

With Bob Thiele producing? I doubt it...

Could be compression artifacts...
Indeed.

Am I the only one who thinks that the microphone is a significant deal of the recorded sound? Just adding another thorn....
No you're not - room as well if you go for a least processed kind of sound and not talking specifically about the clips in this thread.

Yeah, I thought so for the Buddy Rich clip, but the clip from his album didn't sound that much different. I don't have this CD, so I can't check out a decent copy of the recording. I did listen to some samples from the rest of the album---I changed my mind. The soprano track is clearly close miked--there's a 'honky' sound when he goes below D on 'Hillary'. Funny, though, I thought that stuff went out by 1994, when the album was recorded. I thought Smitty's drums sound really good.

I just think his choice of notes and nuances far outweighs the actual tonal quality of his mouthpiece. I've heard Brecker with a very similar tone on a Guardala. Listen to the crowd. They respond to the lead into the blues theme. This is a great performance for sure. But it's the musicianship that prevails for sure. Not the mouthpiece.

I heard a story about why Buddy liked Steve. "No clams".
