First, all talent comes from above and it is only on loan to me. So on those rare occasions when I play way better than I should be able too, I know Who the glory belongs to.

Last night, was one of those times.

It was "Fifth Sunday Singing" where everybody that wants to, or is expected to, signs up to sing, play instruments or even recite poetry. And this goes on for the entire evening church service. I'd already signed up my wife and I for a sax/flute duet and I signed up the orchestra to play a special score I’d been working on. But I decided to throw in one extra solo piece to make sure we had enough music to cover the entire service.

I decide to whip out my little brown patina Buescher TT alto with my new mouthpiece setup. This included a no-USA Florida Link STM, stock lig and Rico Plasticover #3 reed. The music was the old spiritual song, "I want Jesus to Walk with Me". I'd used this piece a lot while working on my new setup and had even recorded portions of it to post here in discussions on my setup experimentation. The background music was my own computer-rendered creation and I embedded it in a PowerPoint so the lyrics would be projected onto our screens while I played.

When I got into the piece, I pushed it just about as hard as I could. And the rich fat palm-key notes of the TT just cut the air like hot butter. After I finished, there was dead silence for a few seconds and I got worried I'd pushed the "blues envelope" a little too hard for Baptist church. But then the applause came loudly. This congregation had already come to expect a lot from me and I knew I’d just pushed the bar way up out of sight. And I knew I had really killed it.

What a horn. What a night. What a rich full life of faith far beyond anything I could have ever imagined. My cup is truly full. :bluewink:

Sounds like a wonderful experience, a moment to cherish.

Plus, if anyone does drop dead, you can go in to confession right there and then...

These times are far too rare. I believe that many in the church are almost afraid to play our best and push the envelope as we see it as glorifying ourselves. All this does is deny the church the pleasure of the abilities and gifts we've been given. Thanks for the encouragement to 'go for it' when the opportunity arises.

I just had one of those wonderful praise and worship Sunday mornings. Started off really rough and I struggled through the first few songs feeling terrible. Then the spirit just opened up when we were playing Open the Floodgates of Heaven....Let it Rain. Man it didn't just rain, it poured! The pastor turned to me and started playing "air saxophone". That was my cue so I just took off with my Yani tenor and Durga mpc with a wailing solo. The altar filled up with folks on their knees. To God the glory!

Our church's orchestra (all the wind and string players) was playing last weekend with our praise band and somewhere during "Majestic" the Holy Spirit just began to fill up the entire congregation and the energy seemed to feedback between us and them. It was one of those sublime moments where everything was building up to something truly great! Each piece we did seemed to keep building on that energy! I know exactly how you guys felt! Unfortunately, no solos but that's okay as the arrangements our musical director has done are really first rate and give the saxes a chance to stretch our legs a bit! For me, it's the whole experience of playing with some wonderful people and giving God the glory!! Coming away from that service, I was so pumped!! I truly wish that we could play every week but we have to alternate with the choir. I credit the church's need for a sax player for my reawakening of my love of the saxophone!
