Two of my sons have perfect pitch and they so are quite harsh in their critiques of various vocalists; the tuning issues just annoy them. However, they all agree that Ella is one of the most in-tune singer that they have heard and is therefore a joy for them to listen to (in addition to all of her musicianship).

Fantastic performance. :)

It swings so hard and I think the bass player has a big role in that, playing incredible lines with a deep fat sound (I guess it's Ray Brown).

She swings so hard. She has such a great freedom with phrasing over the bar lines.
It might be Ray on bass. They just don’t show the bass player so I can’t tell.

I nearly saw her perform once, at ArtPark in Lewiston NY, but she got sick and had to cancel.
I've seen here at Friday 12th July 1985 at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag in the 'Tuinpaviljoen' between 19:00 and 20:00:

Not fully, because Dizzy and Jon Faddis performed around the same time in 'Carousel Zaal 1' . Later that evening Jimmy Witherspoon performed in that same hall of the festival building (having 9 big concert rooms). (Those were the times!)

Since I already got called a troll before I'll just throw in the downer. Great great singer, someone said her voice was so young, but,,, I wonder what the guys really thought when she'd go into her spiel mimicking the horn players with that scat singing or whatever it is. It was a time still fresh in jazz players minds that singers had played a huge role in the demise of the big bands and here's old Ella sticking it in their faces. There was another time, speaking of Jimmy Witherspoon, where Buck Clayton's guys got into a brawl right on stage, Emmett Berry smashing his bell at Jimmy's head for taking the focus away from the horn players. The guys here don't look too amused when Ella's doing her thing. One funny thing notice Lester can play horn and chew gum at the same time.

Talent is talent. I don't know why the horn players would mind. Musicians I know, love to hear others with talent. Thats part of the joy.
There will always be jealous people though. For me, talented singers are talented singers.
Ella and Mel Torme to name two, killed it from the melody, interpretation, and phrasing side... but also from the improv side.
Both were GREAT improvisers.
I don't look at it as a "spiel mimicking the horn players with that scat singing".
