Hey everyone! Here's the first episode of my new video series - "How to NOT SUCK at Teaching Music!"

I see so many issues in music education and I really want to talk about some of them and hopefully find some solutions. In this first episode I talk about what I think is the biggest problem in music education, and that is EGO.

Have a look and let me know what you think! I have a lot more episodes coming out in this series, so definitely stay tuned for them. Subscribing makes it a lot easier to follow along and it helps me out as well! https://www.youtube.com/davepollack?sub_confirmation=1

As a music educator of 32 years who has since retired, I have a few comments. First, the opposite of ego is humility. Second, if a student or group achieves success the credit should go to the students. If a student or group fails, the blame falls on the teacher. Third, the goal of any music teacher should be to make himself/herself unnecessary. In other words teach the student "how to learn" and progress themselves. Last, the best way to influence other music teachers is to teach by example, not by making videos telling them what to do.

Man, I agree 1000 %. I offered my mentoring, helping, practicing, services for free to every high school and middle school teacher in Napa county one year and got zero response The teachers either thought a. they were incredible and needed no extra help even free or b. they really didn't know what they were doing and wanted no extra eyes on what they did. So you are so right, it should be all about the student . Not the teacher. And I love the teachers that roll out all the famous people they have played with when the kids have no clue who they are talking about and really dont care. Good vid , dave. K

Great video Dave . I had an experience with a person like this some years ago .

Took one 'lesson' and knew instinctively that this was not the person to deal with for ALL the reasons you mentioned.

Ended up trying to befriend them instead but ultimately that was a big dead end also, and not all that surprising, really.

A self inflated ego with a superhip 'persona' overcompensating for massive insecurities .
