Save time- just place it on the sidewalk and smack it with a large hammer. All things are possible and you could probably have it black nickle plated by someone for under or at a hundred bucks. You'd want to have someone redo the facing after this. Cost? Depends on who does it- anywhere from a couple of bucks to viel geld. Lacquering would almost certainly be a bad choice for a mouthpiece.

um..........yea how much cuz it would be nice if it matched my tenor XD
Call some of the automotive custom bling shops, they get small items plated all the time.

I dont see that a refacing is necessary for the few microns of plating involved..production mouthpieces are plated post facing after all.

There is one next door to my work, but I dont suppose canadian pricing is much good to you.

Dont forget the lig;) Does seem like a rather shallow waste of money though, but if it makes you happy, and lessens the likelyhood of chopping and changing mouthpieces, go for it!

Have you listened to peoples' responses to you on this thread:http://saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=69770 ?
Really, I find you are way too concerned with aesthetics. THEY DO NOT MATTER. Look at all the famous jazzers you know. I seriously doubt you will find one that cares/cared what there horn looked like, much less THE COLOR OF THEIR MOUTHPIECE. But, I really can't stop you, so if you have a hundred-ish dollars to burn, or if your family's rich enough that they will waste money on this bs, then go ahead and get your mouthpiece plated to match your sax.

(btw, you'll find that using proper spelling and grammar on a forum greatly increases people's respect for you)

On a side note, Dexter Gordon received one of the first (and only) colored Selmer saxes and seemed quite happy with it. ;)

I agree though, the aesthetics do not matter. Well, maybe you should get your nice horn out for the tuxedo gigs, but for the "real" music, who cares how it looks?

One would not want to reface a piece after its plated. That would just defeat the purpose. Nickle is rather brittle...no matter what color. Once the finish is broken (so to speak) flaking can occur more easly. Do keep in mind that plating can change the facing a tad. I personally think the difference would be over considered by most.

All in all, however, Id say just play your horn and forget the rest.

I always find that the guys that are out there playing every night seem to care a lot less about equipment than us guys who post on this site. I was out at a pub listening to a very nice quartet and I asked the guy who was playing tenor if he was using a Selmer S-80, that's what it looked like from where I was sitting. He said he wasn't sure, he had borrowed the horn and just played what was in the case. He sounded excellent to me.

You take it from there :?
Sure, I'm drunk, but what does that have to do with anything :D :drunken:

And in the interest of full disclosure I should disclose that I have two Lamberson mouthpieces even though I am, at best, a hack player. So I guess I am truly in that 90th percentile :D

Jeez folks, where's the holiday spirit?

I'm one of those who couldn't usually care less about what my musical tools look like. In some reverse sense, I think it looks hipper when it all looks like it's been worn in. Looks like you actually use it. But....

Does anybody here know mudrock? Do you know how ofter s/he practices or how good s/he is? I don't like bling, but some people just like that stuff and that's just the way it is. I heard from "legendary" saxophonist Billy Harper's own lips that he play tested other horns that had better overall attributes than the horn he finally selected because he just dug its looks.

Man, the guy just asked a question.

yes..but plating a mouthpiece?.......that's going too far.....how many peaple notice what a mouthpiece looks like!!!!!
On the other hand many brass mouthpieces are plated, gold or silver. If I recall correctly, Guardala had advertising material espousing the effect of one or the other on the sound produced. The gold plating was more expensive and, as you might expect, produced the better sound.

Dave Guardala was also a master of marketing, the silver/gold plating on a mpc effecting the sound is silly.

Also, Brecker plated a silver plate Guardala. Brecker had lots of odd things in his equipment that he said would enhance the response(i.e. silver neck screws) or sound but no gold plated mouthpiece. Something tells me he would have if it made any difference besides aesthetics.

mudrock1000 has stated before that he is 13 (but, on his profile, he's 17, so...). I don't want to be biased against him because of his age, and since it's the internet (he could be forty, but that's not likely), I'll just assume he's a student. Trust me, if this guy was a gigging pro, I couldn't care less what he did with his mouthpieces. But, at this age, he really shouldn't care about this stuff.
