Ok... I gave a shot to my Mark VI and remembered how amazing this horn is. My Series II will have to be patient for a while...

Now, when you guys travel, how do you take care of your horn at a hotel? Lets say you go to Acapulco, sun, beach, swimming pool... and the horn is at the room, alone?

Any advice? Any thoughts?

Always make sure you use at least SPF 30 on your horn... And if it's a "big bell" model, stick to one-piece suits.

Leave it at the front desk with a generous tip, to insure its safety. Carry it everywhere else.

Especially be leary of the tourist destinations. Why are you taking your horn there? If you're playing a gig is there a common location for the band's gear (a truck that's locked and alarmed)?

If you don't HAVE to take your VI, then don't. If you have to, either make arrangements with the front desk or the band manager.

Never get a poolside or ground floor room, always an upper floor. Always leave the TV on loud and the "Do Not Disturb" sign hung outside the door-only let housekeepers in while you're there, and make sure to let them know that they aren't allowed in the room without your presence. Put the horn under the bed-maids never look under there(and don't you either-they never clean under the bed. Even in 5 star hotels you can't begin to imagine the things I've found under beds in hotels!Don't take your horn on vacation-it doesn't need one and nobody's impressed-travel with your horn for work. Have the front desk change the key everyday(electronic keys)the front desk with a very good tip is an alternative, but then someone else with minimal responsibility is watching? out for your horn.

The key word is INSURANCE!

Then get detailed information from your insurance agent (when he refers to something make sure you see it physically in the insurance policy) about under what circumstances your sax is insurable and what not.

For example, I have very good instrument insurance with one caveat - if it's stolen from my auto from 01:00-06:00 it's not covered.

What might seem like a safe place for your sax might turn out to be a condition that the insurance company will not cover...and the opposite. Don't leave it up to guess work.

Of course if you've done a lot of shopping around and hand-selected your Mark VI you don't want it taken, even if you can get money to replace it, so I would find someone who will give it a very high appraisal amount to allow you to insure it for top dollar and to find a suitable replacement if you need to file a claim for loss.

I've traveled for years, through two VI's and now a 36, like Gary states good insurance. And I always make an effort to know and be nice to the hotel concierge and have him/her keep it in a valuables room or safe when not performing.

It's easy, leave the horn under the bed................................................................................................................at home and take the ref. or whatever.
Seriously when I do gigs that involve overnights, I always take the horn into the hotel room even when the rest of the band leave the gear in the bandwagon. I get some ribbing about this. Once bitten twice shy!

Not blowing your favorite horn is hard!

When traveling there is always the chance to take a side horn. Let's say, the Series II I have and still it will be a very painful loss if something happens to it.

What I am kind of afraid of is to let the horn to be at the front desk... I know they will "make" responsible, but may be the horn will get some unwanted advertisement... "hey, there is a Selmer there, be careful!"...

Well, I guess it comes with the sax playing life... to be worry about your horn...
