How Do You Pronounce _____ ?

7643 Views 27 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  csax
We've been through Buescher, Couf, Keilwerth, Rovner, and more. Anyone for a dedicated thread?

For starters, can someone help me out with "Guardala"? Is it gar-DAL-a, gwar-DAL-a, or something else?

I say GWARdala, on the basis that it's italian derived. Probably wrong (again!)
gar-DA-la

some people pronounce it a*z, but that's another matter.
Can't concentrate on how to pronounce anything, with a Mauriat advert whizzing up and down the side, James Carter flashing RooPads at me from above - and now all my details seem to have escaped from the discretely small box at the side and become a stonking great banner across the page....:(

I may just have to invest in some shades......

Daliahs have homeopathic properties. Are you a homeopath?

Chewbaca, by the way.
Gard - aar - la.

I know someone that calls Yanagisawa 'Yaganakasaki' - I wonder if there'll be a cheapo sax with this name soon? There are Chinese-built instruments with Japanese-sounding names - I seem to remember a flute on eBay going by the name 'Miyazaki' or similar.

garrr-dal-la*

In case anyone's curious...

After recently hearing someone pronounce the drummer Paul Motian's name "Mo-tee-ahn" I decided to look it up. I always thought it was just "Mo-shun." I found an interview with Motian saying the following (my paraphrase, if memory serves):

Due to Armenian descent, the correct pronunciation is "Mo-tee-uhn." At first, he tried to get everyone to pronounce it correctly, though most assumed it was "Mo-shun." But eventually, he gave up and now actually goes by "Mo-shun."

So, I'm going to keep saying "Mo-shun," mainly just because it sounds way cooler. You may not care, but I was curious, so now you have to hear about it.:D

...By the way, I say "Gar-dah-luh," but I have no reason to think that's correct, other than I can read...at leest uh loodel.
There's a band I met last week, called '!!!'. Pronounce that!

Hmm. Well, you met 'em; how do THEY pronounce it?

It's generally best to follow the pronunciation of the natives. . . .:D
"!!!"

In computer circles, my circle at least, "!!!" would be pronounced bang-bang-bang. :)
What about "Broadus?" BRO-dis? BRAW-dis? BRO-a-dis?
