How come there is a runyon only section, but there isn't the same thing for any other brand of mouthpiece? Are Runyon's super special or something, or did the creator of the forum really like Runyon's, or what?

At one time everyone was jumping on the Runyon bandwagon so they decided to give them their own section. There was alot of questions and discussion on the various models. Lately it seems there isn't much interest in Runyon mouthpieces as there have been lots of bandwagons to jump on since then.

Yep. Plus one of the former valuable contributors to SOTW who wrote articles and who was a great help, was a Runyon fan and that generated interest. Also the late Santy Runyon would participate from time to time, adding interest to these discussions.

Funny you should ask, Yazzman, because just a little while ago I noticed the Runyon category and it struck me that maybe it's time it was absorbed into the rest of the subject areas, ie not set apart.

We haven't made any changes to these areas but I think we'll have some discussions about how to proceed. Personally, I like having the Runyon information set up the way it is and wouldn't mind seeing a couple of other mouthpiece makes added.

I was thinking, at one time, Pete was going to catagorize it more when he was a moderator. Runyon may have been the first at that time. It would be nice seeing more done that way. :)

It is clear to me that different saxes catagories have different demands on mouthpieces. I do one type of thing with tenor and something else with soprano. The mouthpiece that works well on tenor is not the type of mouthpiece I would use on soprano. So I consider my sop Runyon something to compare with my two Selmer pieces. When I look for info on new mouthpieces I look in the context of the sax category - tenor or soprano.

Recently, I came to the conclusion that the Runyon Custom without spoiler is probably the best all-around mouthpiece I have. But then I come to conclusions every few months.

I'd like to see this special section for Runyon disappear. We should have more discussions comparing mouthpiece brands as well as discussing the other aspects of mouthpieces - squeeze throat vs open, high vs low baffle, HR vs metal, etc.

Why not! I love Runyons. Here's what I use:

Soprano - 8* HR Spoiler
Alto - Jaguar 8*, Quantum metal spoiler 9*, XL 11*, Bionix 10*
Tenor - HR Spoiler 9*, Quantum metal spoiler 8*, Smooth Bore metal spoiler 12*
Bari - Quantum Delrin 11*, Metal spoiler 9*
