I'm having trouble deciding what kind of instrumentation to use for a hip-hop ensemble. After listening to a plethora of different instrumentals the usual format is 2trombones 1 trumpet 2 saxophones usually one alto, and one bari or tenor, but my main issue is the low sounds. I've experimented and I like the combination of trombone and bari for basslines while alto and 1st trombone go at it with the high melodies. I need some advice from jazz people, and classical people, and if people that play jazz/hip-hop styling too. I've never really tried anything like this before any thoughts would be appreciated.

let me tell you right away that you probably won't need nearly that many horns to be able to pull this off. IMO, a trumpet, trombone and sax (tenor would sound best, I think) would do the trick, as long as they are have fat, cutting sounds that can rise above the synth strings and the drums. They'll need to be tight and percussive as well as well produced. As for the arrangement, the bulk of the horn parts are played with the synth strings, so I would have the trombone take the long notes and play the root while the sax plays the fifth above and the trumpet does the melody. If you have a second trombone, have him play the higher stuff an octave below the trumpet. If you have a bari, harmonize on the long notes in the low range with the trombone.

the important thing to remember about hiphop is that most of the music comes from the drums and bass, and that the horns are only ornaments. the problem is that if they don't sound good they will take away from the performance.
.
hope this helps! i'll add more later if i can think of something.

very true I've been very concentrated on basslines, and right now that's what I"m working on. I also forgot to mention my keyboard player I always take piano players for granted but I will keep in mind you advice for my arrangements.
