High F, F# are clear every time. That high G still eludes me. What fingering are real 10M players using on vintage 10Ms?

Suggestions?

Just the front F key, possibly with side Bb if it seems to like it. High G especially is all about voicing. Can you get a high G from a low C fingering? Work up to it that way first and you will be able to hit it anytime, any horn, with any number of fingerings.

Wow.....what a sound! Lights are turning on. Not in my head......the neighborhood.......think I best wait till morning.

I don't know about it on the 10M but on most of my horns I get it by using the Octave key, front F and right hand (fisrt finger) F. I add the low C and Bb keys on most of my altissimo notes to make it speak a bit easier.

On my 10M just front F and octave does it. But I really had to work on the voicing - without practicing overtones you won't get anything. So the advice to start with playing the overtones from low C on is a valid one. Don't expect to hit that G right away when you start doing that though - the higher harmonics are hard to get to initially.

I imagine people mean the aux F, iethe key above the LH B key thatyou would normally use in conjunction with the B key to play a high F.

use this key on its own for the G, ie without the LH1 B. But add the side Bb if necessary.

That's the one I use with my 10M. Might want to try transitioning to it from F#3 played with the above fingering, but with right hand 1 (F) added. Play F#3 first, then let go of right hand 1 for G3.

That note hadn't been invented yet in '35.
When I used to have a 10M altissimo was always a challenge with the intonation.

Now that the sun is up, I'm not alarming the neighbors into the streets, I've tried everyone's suggestions:

Everyone aimed at Front F with side Bb and octave key and particularly those playing 10M including Grumps, JazzHouse, but for Rennie who said she plays a 10M but uses only the Front F and octave key(!!) Wow. The latter gave me F# consistently. I'd like to know what piece you are using Rennie. But the other 10M players who added the side Bb worked for me. The side Bb seems to add stability to the tone.....at least for my mouth and piece (a Barone modified STM New York Link).

A critical piece of information from Pete Thomas made everyone else's remarks make sense....."aux F".....so now I'm getting high G consistently (yes, jumping up and down). Though it was no help in playing high G, I particularly enjoyed whaler's trenchant observation. Ah...the missing notes from history.

Mystery solved. Thank you Pete and thank you everyone. (Re-newed love for my 10M and all my fellow SOTWers.....Rennie, your mouthpiece?)

One thing to add - I (and some other people better than me) find that the front f with side Bb works better without the octave key. I also find high f# works better without the octave key. This for Selmers as well as the 10m.

Glad you added that bstrom. I will try it. The F# fingering you use is what? Fingering I use is LEFT HAND: finger1, finger 3; RIGHT HAND: finger1, finger4 on the D# and yes I hold down the octave key. The result is a clear, fast speaking, steady and singing F# that can take a lot of air or a little. Sweet.

Okay......just tried both your suggestions. As regards high G, at least on my 10M, I must hold down the octave key, else high G dissolves like cotton candy in a blowtorch.

The result for F#, however, is like bullet proof. It doesn't matter whether I use the octave key or not. So that's a discovery. Thanks!

If you can't keep the altissimo simple, good luck actually playing any kind of lines up there.
Some of the fingerings you guys are using don't seem very practical.

-88-, my mouthpiece is a HR Otto Link 7* 'Phil-Tone'ized, Rigotti 3,5 reeds. Whaler, thanks for the fingering chart - it will be interesting to see how these will work as alternatives for the fingerings I use (especially G#, what a pain that note is).

I agree , no octave key the sound is bigger. I owned 10M s same thing, I am now on a chu berry.

Front F + Side Bb here also. Try finding it after you've played G an octave below the altissimo first. This will help you get the pitch in your head & will help you to voice it properly.

Try adjusting the height of the high F pad above the tonehole to get high G easier. Some instruments get high G easier with a minimal pad opening. Good luck!
