There are a ton of jazz improvisation books out there. Most of them are for all instruments. I can't think of any that are specifically for alto sax. The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine is great as is Patterns for Jazz by Jerry Coker et al. These are full of lots of great info regarding jazz improvisation and what to play over chords and how to analyze tunes and chord changes. Jamey Aebersold's play alongs are great as well they have music for the tunes, in Eb, Bb, C and Bass clef, as well as CD's with backing tracks. You can find these books, and many others, at www.jazzbooks.com.
