We are sceduled to play at the Molde International jazz festival in july this summer, and I really need some cool groovy tunes to consier for our repertoire....
The band is 2 saxes, 1 alto & 1 tenor/soprano, bass, drums, keyboard/Fender Rhodes/Hammond B3 ,we might add guitar also..
The musicians are not pro's but play great. Locals mainly...this just somethig we do for this gig only....not a regular band....

We dont want the usual standards but more groovy stuff...

anyone?

(dont forget to check out my myspace !)

'The Chicken' by Jaco Pastorious is always a good groovy
one to play. Not so hard. If you have a solid bass player.

'Canteloupe Island' is okay as well, but has been thrashed a bit.

'Maiden Voyage'
'Chameleon'

Hmmm, I seem to be listing all Herbie Hancock numbers....
Work song, Mercy Mercy Mercy, Walk Tall, all by Cannonball Adderley.
Footprints - Wayne Shorter

I played it with a combo and we made nice and groovy...I wish we had a Rhodes and B3 they can increase the groove factor by 10.
Check out the Don Wilkerson collection on Blue Note--that's about as groovy as you're going to get. Also: any Grant Green cd, but esp. Iron City on Bluenote and, while your at it: Lou Donaldson's Natural Soul cd, especially "Spaceman Twist." Do that one and you'll kill 'em.

R.

ps. We do a Meters medley: baaaaaaaaayup!:D

pps. the anti-guitar faction on SOTW might disagree, but a good guitarist will imporve your groovy factor enormously!
