Hi

I need help. I downloaded Audacity recently and was happily recording when I got this CRASH which resulted in my whole pc hanging. The problem was so bad that this happens EVERYTIME I'm in Audacity. There is no specifc action which resulted in the hang. I can be recording or simply listening to my recording when there will be a loud drone and then the whole pc hangs. I had to reboot my pc everytime this happens.

I've tried to look for help in Audacity forums but to no avail.

Pls help.

Have you tried any other audio software? Does media player play okay? it could be a soundcard issue. Try re-installing the soundcard drivers, etc. Has anything changed with your setup, and update to other software etc. There are so many places. I've run audacity on several machines, even a win98 box without issue.

you could try Kristal Audio (another "freeware") or reaper to test....I haven't really messed with either of them, although I do want togive Reaper a run through.

Hi Bill

Thanks for responding. I tried reinstalling Audacity a few times and the same thing happens. No problems with other audio softwares in my pc...including Windows Media Player.

I tried Krystal for a bit last night. No problems.

Could this be a "bug" in Audacity?

I know it is not THE only free audio editor around...but I like it's simplicity.
Are there any more of such user-friendly freeware editors out there...besides Audacity, Krustal...?

Thanks again. Hello from Singapore.

I'm running Audacity on Linux so it might not have the same options but.....

Double check all the settings to make sure they are compatible with your soundcard.
Check under the EDIT menu for Preferences.
Make sure the correct device and settings are selected.

Good Luck.

Bobby's right, make sure you are not trying to use a quality setting, say 48 kHz that your soundcard does not support.

I use Audition 1.5, sonar4, and Audacity. I like Audacity for the simplified recording process. and I like the others for some other reasons. www.goldwave.com has a shareware editor Godlwave that I used when starting out, he also has a multi track called Multiquence, that I have never tried. Goldwave is a stereo recorder and editor and has some nice built ins.

Are you using the new Vista operating system? Or a pre-XP operating system? That could be an issue. There is a lot of software out there now that works well only with XP.

(Note that this is a generalization based on speculation. I have no specific knowledge that Audacity has operating system issues.)

I use Audacity under Vista with no problems.

I use it under XP sp1, sp2 and under Win98 (granted I don't do much with it on that machine, but it has worked fine) I think it's a pc specific issue and might be a conflict with something else, or just trying to do too much with it. I have done a little multi track with it, but sometimes use it for a quick voiceover and mp3 conversions.
