Hello to all,

I posted pretty much the same info in the quarterly intro thread, but I thought I'd do one here as well- since it's a more specific forum.

My name is Chuck & I'm getting back into the sax after 15 years away. I played in my HS band & did the obligatory marching, concert & jazz performances. Though I played bari in the jazz band as a freshman, from soph - senior year I was the jazz drummer- a dearth of talent at the position led me to take on the new challenge.

After selling my sax rigs (Conservarte & YAS23) and my drum kit to pay for college (CSULB- go 'niners!) textbooks (obviously I wasn't a music major) I hadn't thought of picking up any sort of instrument until recently.... I'll be picking up new, used horn very soon.

I plan on (re)learning mainly jazz & blues- since I kind of feel that I never had a chance to truly develop my skills as a jazz artist. BTW, does anyone know of a good instructor in the Long Beach, CA area?

Regards,
-cd

Hello, I am also local to Long Beach. OK I'll do it and give you my instructors name. http://keithfelch.com/ If he has room for you I would start with him. If not ask the cats at Horn Improvement in Mission Viejo. Just so you know though I think one of them also takes lessons from Keith. I also recommend his book but I am biased because without him I doubt I could play a note worth listening to. For me I had to try really hard to get where I am unlike some people it just comes really easy to.

I take lessons with Keith. His thoughts on jazz and improvisation are very organized and easily digested. I would strongly recommend him. When you get a new horn, bring it down to Horn Improvement, we'll be glad to get you set up and going in the right direction.

Hey man thanks for my hooking me up with my Barone neck and my JJDV. The guys down at Horn Improvement are very laid back, helpful and all that sort of good stuff. If you haven't spent time blowing on some horns and trying mouthpieces at Horn Improvement, and you are within 50 miles, I would suggest making a trip.

If you do make the trip bring some money because they don't trade in shells or anything not carved from gold!!!!!

Thanks for the tips, guys. When I pick up a horn, I'll definitely bring it in to Horn Improvement. Right now I'm borrowing a buddy's Bundy II that he had laying around. I'll prob. bring it down sometime this week.

Yeah we are hoping to be good enough to play Blue Cafe really soon. We want to work out a few more kinks before we try for bigger gigs. By the way Pine Ave goes off now there are a couple jazz clubs, a big club called THE VAULT, numerous new bars and restaurants. They even have a GameWorks if you like to play games etc. Yeah I also remember Bogarts!!!! Do you remember Barwinkles? or Bentley's? They are 2 more party spots from yesteryear no longer around.

Honestly though I have seen some pretty crappy bands at Blue Cafe, I just don't want to be one of them. I would rather be patient and wait until the group really knows the songs.

Yeah- I hear ya on the crappy bands! Do us LB guys a favor and post when your group catches a local gig. I'd definitely lend my support.
