Fingers crossed for this elder statesman. I got a really nice letter from Lee once after sending him my book.

BTW, Birth of the Cool was 1949, not '57. Imagine that. Six decades plus.

Hang tough Lee.

I just saw him play two sets during the run at the BlueNote in NYC the weekend before last. He was in fine form. He will most completely be in my thoughts.

I had a chance to talk to Bill Frisell about Lee's condition. He says that Joey Baron has spoken to Lee who is recovering well and is in good spirits. He has family and friends with him for support. The biggest problem now is that his doctors don't want him to fly for another five weeks!

Note on Lee's condition from Dan Tepfer's twitter

In important news, Lee Konitz is out of the hospital and back safely at home in New York. Just saw him & he's doing well, wry as ever.

Good news! Lee is back and playing out. From the Times:

Lee Konitz-Tomasz Stanko Quintet (Tuesday through Sept. 17) Lee Konitz, the intuitive and stubbornly inventive alto saxophonist, has lately been recovering from health setbacks, which lends this engagement the unavoidable air of a comeback. He’ll have a worthy frontline partner in the acclaimed Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, and they’ll have the benefit of a dynamic rhythm section with Dan Tepfer on piano, Thomas Morgan on bass and Jim Black on drums. At 8:30 and 11 p.m., Birdland, 315 West 44th Street, Clinton, (212) 581-3080, birdlandjazz.com; $30 and $40 cover, with a $10 minimum.
