Happy Birthday to "Prez" Lester Young. The tenor players tenor player.

Lester Young, put the swing and smooth into the groove. As well as language.

Any saxophonist worth their salt knows Lester's work, and knows his contribution.

To me, he is timeless and forever.

RIP Prez

One of the best solos I've ever heard!

PS RIP Bird whose solo on this track is almost as wonderful!

Beat me to it man... Lester is the source. All of the greatest players learned from him. He is one of the key founders of Modern Jazz. We owe him a great debt. Transcribe one of his solos today.

Happy Birthday Lester!

Happy Birhthday Prez! a modern tenor before his time and a big infuence on Bird and the Cool school of tenor playing. i love the trios with Nat King Cole and of course Prez with Count Basie and some late 50's Prez appealed to me too. some may say that at the very end he lost the magic but i say it was very tender and melancholy in a good way with the typical snap and bounce. Prez played his peoples real good.

I will always love Prez, and will never ever ever get tired of listening to my favorite Prez tracks. The smoothest, hippest, subtlest, sweetest and by a rather wide margin, the coolest of us all.

For those of you who are not member of the cult , in Prez-speak, he would refer to his fingers as his peoples.

Happy birthday Prez!!!

One of my favorite quotes, wasn't it Miles that said "anyone who doesn't play like Lester is wrong." Love that one...

Classic early clip with Basie, just came up in another thread about Herschel Evans who's also featured
Doggin' Around

'nother with Basie...Lady Be Good
Lady Be Good

Some beautiful ballad playing on Stardust...not sure how some of the images fit into all this...
Stardust

In this slow clip, you can really appreciate his harmonic abilities...the kind of playing Dexter Gordon drew a lot from early on.
I'm Confessin'

here's that classic clip with Billie Holliday on Fine and Mellow. Failing health and all he say so much with so few notes...that's a huge slice of jazz history all in one room!

#1 innovator.

Nothing was as deep as what Prez was doing.

Nothing like him then, or now.

And to think he walked into the studio for the first time in '36
and laid down 'Oh Lady be Good'.
Still my favourite two choruses of anything....ever.

Even B.B.King is throwing down the love for Lester:

B.B. King is the blues guitar equaivalent of Lester Young. Both of them make every note count and never play an uneeded note. I think Miles falls into this category as well.
