Do you keep the black rubber piece when playing Hahn reeds?

  • I'd like to experiment, removing and sticking the rubber piece

Hi,
I wonder how many people use the black rubber piece and how many people remove it. The original idea is to keep that piece removable in order to allow the player to remove it without damaging it, and keeping some adhesive there for sticking it again.
It's very difficult to find an adhesive which is strong enough and allows to remove and stick again and it's pointless if most people use the reeds with the rubber piece, then would be better to use a strong permanent glue.
I'll appreciate your replies.

It seems most player (75%) do prefer to use the reeds with the rubber piece on. I'd like to know why there's people who prefer to remove it.
Thank you in advance

It seems like they play a bit brighter with the rubber strip removed. If you like a bright sound (I do) then it gets removed. FWIW, I have bought probably 30-40 Hahn reeds over the last 6 years. Still my favorite reed.

Saxnbax, would you mind to use knife or a cutter for removing the black piece? It's hard to find an easily removable adhesive but strong enough to keep the rubber piece in place when using tight ligatures. So, an alternative would be to use a stronger glue.

No I'd give it a try.

Don't worry, the rubber piece will be removable from now on.

Hi Luispa,
The rubber piece is too thick for both my Francois Louis Ultimate Ligature and too thick for my Borgani Flexitone ligature. However, if I remove the rubber piece, I cannot use my Flexitone ligature. How difficult would it be to offer the rubber pads in various thicknesses? Other than my problems with the rubber pads, I really like Hahn reeds and have been using them exclusively for several years.
Thanks,
Heath
