I just finished a three-weekend run of Gypsy. To tell the truth, I didn't think much of the music. I didn't look forward to any of the melodies. The big number, "Everything's Coming Up Roses" was yucky to me.

It's funny, because I've heard it called one of the greatest musicals ever. It does have an engaging story with somewhat engaging characters. But musically it left me cold.

I had the same impression when I watched the movie. I was inspired to do so after a lady adamantly asked the band to play "Let Me Entertain You" for her. An older gentleman in the band slightly remembered it, so we faked it.
The movie and songs on the movie left me disappointed as well. older gentleman in the group

I have done it too and have had a similar feeling. I think it's popularity has to do more with the "catchy melodies" because the orchestrations are certainly not "happenin".
