Guardala Crescent LT MPC: reed fitting

1864 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  ajdailey
Hi to all

I got a silver DG Crescent (laser trimmed) mpc from wwbw a few months back. The mpc came with a black fabric lig.

I don't seem to be able to fit my Rico royal (3) tenor reed into the lig. Despite loosening both screws all the way, the reed is so tight that it seems out of place. I have already dented two reed tips already.

When I do manage to get the reed in, it appears that the reed width is a tad wider than the rails. Tightening the lig screws does not seem to give a proper grip.

I have been playing irregularly past few years on my Yamaha YTS 62 and know my limitations in embrochure and technique. But the terrible sounds from this mpc seems more likely a hardware problem than technique....(?)

There is another type of reed I need for this mpc?
I appreciate all the help I can get.

Thanks!

I wouldn't suggest a reed change, I'd suggest you change the mpc. Do you have any other mouthpieces.
The ligs that come with the Guardalas now are cheap and don't fit. Get a new ligature! Try a Rovner or a Selmer 402, (silver plated metal lig for the Selmer alto piece, which fits the Guardalas)........daryl

Hi Heath

I do have the stock YTS62II mpc and a Morgan 2C which play fine but found both a bit closed. I got the Crescent (read it on the SOTW to be 0.0100 and 0.011) and also having a dark sound which I prefer.

Thanks for your reply!

Hi Daryl

Thanks for enlightening me on the lig. I am surprised that such a higher-priced mpc came along with such an ill-fitting lig! :(

I do have a Rovner fabric lig I use for my alto Morgan 6L. Will this Rovner fit?
If not, I will go ask the local store if they have the Selmer 402.;)

Many thanks!

That is interesting to hear about the ill-fitting reed. I had a LT MBII for a while - I thought it was one of the best made off the shelf metals I've ever seen. Incredibly reed friendly and stable. I tried a lot of contemporary metals and the LT was a champ for sure.

I never had the lig, so I don't know about what might be amiss there. I used a Rovner on mine to great avail.

Hi EZ

Thanks for your comments.
I am sure the LT Crescent is as reed friendly and stable as the LT MBII. It is highly likely that the lig supplied is not a good fit. May I know which Rovner lig you used on your LT MBII?

Thanks

You could try using bass clarinet reeds, they can run just a little skinnier in width.
I am quite sure it was one sized for an STM - sorry I can't give you a model number on that. It was a Rovner dark.
I believe the 2M Dark or the L12 Light Rovner sizes fit the Guardalas.........

Hi Daryl
Many thanks! Will go try these Rovners and the Selmer 402.
You sure are a great help!

Crescent

Excellent choice with the Crescent. It's my main piece and the best I've ever played. I use the Selmer 402 which others have mentioned and have no reason to try anything else with the results I'm getting from it.
