Hi Folks,

my teacher plays a handmade Guardala BM and I very much dig his sound (here's some samples: http://www.sl-q.de/music.html). Well, maybe this relates more to the guy than to the mouthpiece, but anyhow.

Besides I cannot afford a BM, I don't think I would be up to the 0.114 tip opening. What do you suggest as an altenative to produce a similar sound (I know, practice, practice,... :)?

I currently play a JJ DVNY 7* (YTS61 horn), which I mostly like, but it lacks some 'depth' or 'warmth' and I'm also having a hard time with overtones and proper articulation. It gets harder to play the higher I get on the horn. I found that a slightly higher beak (and maybe also a shorter facing?) supports articulation and overtones better (at least for me, maybe it's a voicing thing).

Regards,
Thomas

Well if you want to achieve a "similar sound" you are going to have to work on the overtones. It's tedious, but once you get it your sound will improve. I think it's more reasonable to say a brighter fatter tone than similar tone. Keep in mind that you are going to always sound like yourself tone wise, but you can sound like yourself in a brighter , fatter manner.

As a side note I really dig your teachers playing, it shows Brecker's influence, maybe a bit milder and goes really well with the vocalist. Interesting concept.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I might work my embrochure up to the 8* Guardala.
Virtually every mouthpiece I really liked in the past was 8* (on tenor) or 7 to 7* (on alto).

Thomas
