You could try MusicTeX http://www.mab.jpn.org/musictex/musictex_e.html or LilyPond http://lilypond.org/web/ neither of them are for troff but they are both available for most flavours of unix and for windows.

Thanks SassenachSax. I know of both, but MusicTeX suffers from a severe case of TeX bloat, and lilypond seems to be GUI-based. Just wondered if there was anything lightweight in the Kernighan/Pike way of doing things. I guess I'll have to roll my own.

Anyone got any pointers to or opinions about what would be desirable in a very lightweight music setting language (along the lines of pic, grap, eqn and co...)?

I'd use MusicXML as either the file format or as an import/export format. That would give you the ability to exchange charts with some of the big guys.
