Great Metal Jazz Piece?

15418 Views 124 Replies 32 Participants Last post by  altoplayermiami
I love Tenor, it is my main Axe, and I am hoping on taking one horn to college. My Selmer being the lucky lady. I have close to $100 to spend. I need something that I will last awhile, and will play all empending Jazz/Rock/Blues etc. Styles that will come along. Right now I am just looking for suggestions.

Why limit yourself to just metal?

If you're looking for an all-around jazz/rock mouthpiece, look no further than a Morgan Excalibur. A used one will probably run from $100 to $150.

It will be better finished than any other piece in your price range, and the flexibility in the sound will be just what you need.
I kinda wanted to see, what Metal options I had. I have played Hard rubber for along time. And projection seems to be a problem. I thought metal might fix that.
Link STM cleaned up by MOJO or EZ or one of the other guys. They are the original metal jazz piece and what everybody seems to be making better versions of these days.
what kind of tenor do you play? I play a keilwerth sx90, and my ponzol is whats happening with that horn.
Problem is that I would rather get the piece and not have to pay to get it worked on. I play a Selmer Super Action 80 Serie II. My current setup has worked so far, but it is not a Jazz set up. Great Classical set up, but nothing close to a good Jazz piece.

I need something that I can control, make a good sound on. But when nescarry like during a solo section really rip. I am guessing I will need something with a removable baffle for the Rock/Jazz switch. I need to blend as well.
Get a Link with a fibracell.
I talked to my private lesson teacher about it today. And when I told him what I wanted to do with the piece he immeaditly suggested Metal.

Nah. Just Long tones: practice whisper quiet and Earth-shaking loud. And adjusting your tone from dark to bright.

Woud that also solve my overtone issues?

Metal doesn't inherently have better projection. It's all in the chamber design/tip opening/rail thickness. (and has as much to do with how much air you put through the horn.)

I don't know. What are your overtone issues?
Get a GOOD Berg Or a FLORIDA link , almost every tenor player plays a link and basically sounds the same... I find them boring except the old ones .. the berg is a good mouthpiece and easy to play .. it will also go good with your SA80 II tenor which is a dark horn and give your your own interesting sound .
I am playing Suite Number 1 by Bach the Prelude. And a portion of the solo is changing octives. My problem is jumping from the top octave to the middle one.

I need some projection to my sound, for my work in a church orchestra, with 5 bones and 3 trumpets. But I need control of the sound.

Anybody else hear "long tones" ?

Here is a last chance opportunity. I've got a MOJO Berg and a Grizzel berg. Both excellent. If you can't afford it, go for the HR berg Mojo has for sale.
Its to late now. My next door neighbors are like 3 :).

I looked at WWBW, and am kinda courious about what the Berg's look like (pictures arent showing up):(, if you could PM or just put the pictures up I would appreaciate it.
Did you read my last post? Follow the link too?
Well he said he said close to $100 and the berg in the link is above $200...

I figured though someone who has been on the forum this long would realize material won't do much...
