My girlfriend's father last night gave me his old tenor sax last night. At first i didnt think much of it, just that it was a cool old horn and that it meant a lot to him for me to have it and perform with it. I threw my Link STM 7* on it and fell in love with the big and round sound.

As i was putting it away, i looked for the serial number and realized it was a 10M! I have to look at it again to make sure, but the first two numbers of the serial number i think was 38 (was a little drunk...lol). This places it in the '53-'54 year range based on what i could find online. I think it could be older though, possibly '47-'48. i didnt check if the tone holes were rolled or not, which i will today.

I couldnt believe he was giving me this horn and how lucky i am to get it. He was even more extatic about it after i told him about the history of this model. He had no idea what he had!

I am pretty much a total Connvert now. Congrats on the horn. If you really dig it now, have it checked out by a good tech. When it is at full playing shape it may change your entire perspective on how a sax should sound.

It will be going in to Sheldon Kanis who is an amazing tech and is local as well. He has worked on my horns since high school and i have always got them back feeling and playing better than they were brand new. He is going to be pretty stoked to work on this horn i am sure.

Cool! By the way, whether it is RTH or not, it will be a great horn. I am always trying to choose between my RTH Chu and my non RTH 10M. I love 'em both!

Ok, got another look at the horn. It is a non-RTH model. Where the serial number is reads as:

10M

B

"B" means Bb instrument (tenor). Much earlier in Conn's history this letter would have been "T" for tenor.
"L" means low pitch, the modern standard of A=440 vibrations per second (that would be the high B note on the tenor).
The other number is the serial number, of course. According to drrick.com, that number would be a 1952 model of the 10M, which would not have rolled tone holes. However, these (officially named) Artist saxophones continue to be fine instruments all the way up to 1969 or 1970, so this should be a really good one if in fine playing shape.
Enjoy! How about sharing a few pics of it here?

Thanks for all the info. 1952 was the year i came up with as well. I have a few pics i will try to put up tomorrow. The horn is actually in decent playing condition, but it dedinitely has some leaks. Needs new pads and a good re-balance.

You don't give the broom the tenor if you want him to marry your daughter, you SHOW him the tenor and give him the flimsy alto, and say "I'd give you this tenor but I inted it to stay in the family..." jejeje

I can hardly wait to hear your reaction to the horn after the work is done. I predict that you will be blown away!

Dropped the horn off yesterday so I should get a call from the guy tomorrow or Tuesday afternoon with an estimate for repairs. Considering the way it played before I brought it in, I am thinking it should not be that much.
