Underrated player. Heard him do a two-tenor set with Pete Christlieb in '87. Gave no quarter and asked none. He was playing a 10M, back when nobody important was still playing one.

The man played in Jayne Mansfield's lap. Don't get much better than that.

Damn. I had no idea Gil Bernal had passed. And it was last July. He was one of the people who made me want to play rock 'n' roll. Like a lot of other players, I didn't know who he was until recent years when I started to research who all those guys were who played sax on all those seminal rock records. I learned, like the obit says, that he was on several of the early Coasters records (before King Curtis) and also on Duane Eddy's Rebel Rouser. A few years ago, I learned he occasionally played in the L.A. area, I think it was at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. I planned to go see him at a gig, just like I did with Plas Johnson, and every time I went down to L.A. I'd check his web site to see if he was gigging somewhere, but I never did get around to seeing him. RIP Gil Bernal.

Go see your living musical heroes while you can.
