One of the most talented young Dutch jazz tenor players is Gideon Tazelaar (born in 1997).

He was featured yesterday evening in the very popular Dutch TV talk-show 'De Wereld Draait Door', broadcast-ed during prime time. This doesn't happen that much anymore nowadays. The reason of his invitation was that Gideon did play a song with the Wynton Marsalis Big Band, that gave a concert the day before in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He studied some years under Wynton in the USA.

He only played a very short song in that TV show, but you can here that he has a fantastic tenor sound and is a great and talented player.

The music starts after 1:05:

More info about Gideon Tazelaar can be found here:

For those who want to hear more of him: I posted in another thread some clips of a concert he did in 2016 in the Amsterdam Bimhuis, together with master tenor players Eric Alexander, Ferdinand Povel and Sjoerd Dijkhuizen.

Here is that thread:

His playing sounds like he’s speaking Dutch.
It is true that we have our voices that come out through our playing.
I’ve always told players that our formative years pretty much stay with us throughout our lifetime. I especially tell them to avoid bad drummers. One of the toughest things to fix is your time feel.

I hope that's meant positive whaler! :bluewink:

People from my part of Holland (close to Amsterdam) speak Dutch with what is called a 'hard' G, which sounds terrible for most non Dutch speaking people.

Here's a good one with another tenorist I'm not familiar with called Abdias Armenteros. They both sound fantastic:

Oh yes, that makes me happy! :)

Two young tenor players playing with a great and individual sound. The chase choruses at the end are very nice too.

I also din't hear Abdias Armenteros before, very good player. His style and sound reminds me a bit of Paul Gonsalves.

Just found another nice clip with tenor player Gideon Tazelaar.

This is from a special concert organized with four generations of Dutch musicians:

Gideon Tazelaar - tenorsax, Jesse van Ruller - guitar, Tobias Nijboer - bass & Eric Ineke - drums

Saw Gideon Tazelaar again live today (Saturday 31 Oct 2020) in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, first concert after a lock down of a month due to Covid-19. Het played together with Ian Cleaver trumpet, Juraj Stanik piano, Frans van der Hoeven bass and Roberto Pistolesi drums.

The concert was recorded and will hopefully be soon available on Bimhuis-TV:
BIMHUIS TV - BIMHUIS Amsterdam

He played an old Mark VI now (previously an old Conn, see above clips), still with the same mouthpiece (looks like an old Double Ring Link). Sounding fantastic on the set I saw, a bit more high in the sound compared to the Conn. Striking was that he sounded very close to Ben Webster in a few numbers, seems he found (besides Sonny Rollins) another big inspiration for developing his own style further than it already is (at age 23).

Here is some older stuff to listen to from his website:

Was great to see some live Jazz again (didn't see much since Covid-19 started in March this year), even if it was in a concert room with only max 30 people inside because of current Covid-19 restrictions.

Will share more if I find some stuff from the concert I visited.

I think he was previously playing a Buescher rather than a Conn. He still sounds fantastic on the Mark VI.

What an incredibly talented player. I don't think there are many players out there today on his level. Wonderful sound and improvisation ability. Very Rollins esque to my ears.

He is for sure a super talent Liam and you will probably like that he is also taking a lot from Ben Webster in his playing now, beside Sonny Rollins and a lot of his own at age 23!

I had some email contact with him the day after the Bimhuis concert of last Saturday. He first played an Elkhart built by Buescher, after that shortly a Conn 10m and now a Mark VI from the early 70's. He first played for years a Florida 7* and now since last summer a Florida 10*. He uses mainly old Rico Orange 3 reeds. Incredible sound, very strong.

He was curious playing my '53 SBA and mouthpiece collection, so we will probably make an appointment after Covid-19 issues become less prominent.

By the way, that Bimhuis session was recorded, it might become available here:

(The concert date was Saturday 31/10/2020.)

Here is another nice recent performance. He has great control over that 10* Link.

Very nice. :)

He also plays in that video at 18:30 with the same trumpet players I saw him with in the Bimhuis.

His control is for sure great on that 10* Link, but I sometimes hear a small squeak when he tongs too strong (like at 9:38 in above clip).

Are these the sessions you saw Peter? Certainly some more obvious Ben Webster influence in his melody playing here.
Yes, those are from the session I visited Liam, thanks for sharing. :)

In that first song he is very close to Ben. In that first video they really sound as Clifford Brown and Sonny Rollins in the song starting at 42:50.

You should try to get a gig with him next time you visit NL Liam. I can bring you two in contact if you want.

Rollins makes exactly the same squeaks. A good squeak - I like it :)

Actually last November, when I played in NL, a few of the gigs where originally two tenor with Gideon but he couldn't make it in the end. I was secretly glad as he would wipe the floor with me! I'm happy to just listen and appreciate his talent.

Pity he couldn't make it, but at least the people could enjoy and appreciate your talent Liam. :)

Now the lockdown is over jazz concerts are allowed again in the Amsterdam BIMHUIS jazz-club.

Saturday 17-July-2021 Gideon Tazelaar will perform again with a sexted with young trumpet player Ian Cleaver:

Here is a link to his latest album with recordings made at the Electric Monkey Studios in Amsterdam. The album title is 'Volume 1' and it can be listened for free on Spotify trough this link:

For those without (free) Spotify account here a link to YouTube for the first tune (tenor solo is at 2:35):

Great stuff (especially the tenor and bass player)!

Makes me happy to hear young people like that in these times! :)
