In a small band, consisting of an alto sax, a tenor/soprano sax, a bass, a pianist, a drummer and a trumpet player. Are there any good funk rock songs that we can possibly play?
Anything by The Meters would be cool with that line-up...even better if one or more of you sing. Also check out the Greyboy All Stars (there is some cool stuff out there with Carlos Washington on trumpet), soulive/ lettuce...JAMES BROWN! Rustic Overtones (they have a bone player not trumpet, but solid rock/ funk with great horn arrangement)...Some of this may be interesting with acoustic piano instead of an organ or guitar, but it is all cool.
Arranging some Ben Folds would be interesting too...
Yeah, Cissy Strut by The Meters could be pulled of with a small ensemble, with the keys doing the guitar part. The drummer needs to be pretty good, though, because it's a funky little beat.
JL mentioned Pass The Peas with Maceo Parker. Search utube for Maceo, also the JB Horns. That's a 3-horn section (Fred Wesley on 'bone, Pee Wee Ellis on tenor with Maceo on alto) which will give you lots of material suited to your line-up.
Sorry to revive this thread again...
I'm going to try to find an arrangement of Canteloupe Island...(ridiculously hard)
We added another alto sax
Anything else around that may sound good?
