I am posting the lessons I have created for my high school and Webster University students. Please feel free to use them any way you would like. There will be demos of me playing each lesson and play-a-long tracks too.

The lessons cover one solo by Wardell Gray on a tune called Treadin.

I hope to use this material in improv clinics in the future.

Cool treadin

Christopher -
That's an excellent article! There's something about Wardell's blues lines that is very compelling.
A while back I transcribed (if you can call it that!) the first 2 choruses of his "One O'Clock Jump" solo which is an incredible, driving blues solo - a live recording in Pasadena with Erroll Garner etc. from 1947 I believe. From time to time i play that first chorus in every key. It is such a great melodic line, in the early Lester Young manner with a bop feel, with great swinging forward momentum - it just lifts you off the ground!

ps. I can't seem to reach you from myspace, only from the link here. Hope you can get that rectified so i can add you as a friend.

Neff, you are right about the scale. I think it is just a layout issue. I was just showing the bop scales available.

Major Bop 12345 #5 6 7
Dominant 123456 b7 maj7
minor 12 b3 maj 3 4567

This week's lesson

Here's a short trascription of some James Moody we've been dealing with this week. There is also an exercise over All The Things You Are.

Thanks Chris, I'm going to start a beginning jazz (or any kind) of improv class in my town and this along with Neff's approach will be useful to those kids. I guess the big thing is just to get them to come up with a decent line so they feel like they can "do it". and build from there. Thanks again> K
