I was going to post something and then thought few folks outside of Colorado would know who Fred was. I played in the Colorado Jazz Workshop in the 90's when I first moved to Colorado under his direction and took a few private lessons from him, mostly on flute. He originally played flute in school and took up sax later. In many ways he was a character and had some interesting takes on music as well as other things. Likewise, he was a very kind soul and always encouraged those in the CJW to improvise on at least a couple of tunes throughout the year. I lost tough with him when he stopped directing CJW in around 2000-2001 and hadn't seen him in many years.
