I just purchased a Brilhart Ebolin Special tenor mouthpiece from ebay for $34. It looked old, scratched up and all the all the engraving white fill was worn away. What I thought might be a little unusual was that "Ebolin" was engraved on the shank unlike other Specials where it is engraved on the body underneath the Brilhart logo AND it had a serial number engraved on it. I had never seen a Special with a serial number. To be honest I was purchasing it as a blank for a custom reface, but after I received it I found it outplays any of my other tenor mouthpieces (Modern Slant Sig STM 5* and a Yany #6 hard rubber mouthpiece). I don't think I'm going to let this piece be touched by a refacer as it plays really well as-is.

BTW, yes I've been bitten by the Brilhart bug. Too bad I didn't realize how much I like these pieces 10-20 years ago. I'm still looking for a great deal on a Tonalin but for now this Special is just that -- special!

My go-to MPC for more mellow playing is my Streamline Tonalin 5*, they are superb mouthpieces except that they don't work with all horns.
I think the older Tonalins had slightly larger chambers, right? While this special really gives me a fat sound, a good Tonalin might be a little better. But honestly, I can't believe how well this special plays. I didn't think they spent much on the facings for Specials since they were marketed as student models, so this one was very unexpected.

Oh my, it seems like someone has a bad case of G.A.S.. You just turned me on to that Brilhart Walmart deal and after you bought this one just the other day! You know, I never gave any of the plastic mouthpieces any respect until I found a Tonalin #5 for my alto. I just absolutely love that mouthpiece. The irony is, I started out playing on a Selmer Goldentone, that was over 50 years ago.

One things for sure, this plague better be over soon or I might max out my CC. Let's see, I need some reeds, a new lig, a new neck strap for my tenor ......
