Don't know if Wardell Gray is forgotten or not, but Gray and Don Byas were pretty integral in bebop's early evolution on tenor...as far as advancing harmonically and stylistically from the earlier players like Prez, Ben Webster, Bean,etc. At least that's been my understanding...
A great player. Ted Nash likened his style of improvisation as 'guitar style'
IMO he would/ could have become a 'main man' but for his untimely end and drug habit,
