It has been 15 years this month since Afrobeat master Fela Kuti passed on. Just before his death, Fela wrote his last tune and rehearsed it with his Egypt 80 band. Unfortunately the song was never recorded, but in a recent interview, Fela's former baritone saxophonist Rilwan "Showboy" ***bemi recalls that final rehearsal. Fascinating. The interview can be read at http://crazybentbrasstube.blogspot.com/2012/08/fela-kutis-last-song-never-recorded.html.

If you are a Fela fan, http://crazybentbrasstube.blogspot.com/ includes other recent interviews with Showboy, starting in June, that recount 30 years of playing, touring, and recording with Fela.

After attending a memorial for a Nigerian friend who died in the ET302 crash earlier this week, I hauled out my TH&C tenor and blew out my lungs to Fela Kuti. Really wishing I had a bari (or two) right about now.
