"Serenity" and "Anniversary". I think he was playing at his best towards the end of his career. "People Time" is really special, too.

That said, I also really love the early stuff with Jimmy Raney. I have a Mosaic boxed set that includes everything they did together, and most of it is smoking bop-oriented stuff.

My least favorite Getz is the stuff that made him a household name - the Bossa Nova period....but it's ALL good IMO. He's easily one of my Top 5 all-time favorite sax players.

For me it's "Sweet Rain." It's a terrific album -- and it's the first "real" saxophone album I ever bought, when I was in my teens. I wore out 2 vinyl copies, and I think I'm into my 2nd cd.

Yeah, definitely "People Time" even though technically he is not at his best because he's struggling physically, emotionally it's triumphant.
When he plays "I'm okay" the irony is so poignant.

Another favorite is "The Master" (1975-Columbia), I have it on vinyl, I don't know if it's been reissued. A very hard swinging quartet album.

Focus & Blue Skies - but I also REALLY like his work with Gilberto. Some really classic stuff there!

Everything he recorded at Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen: People Time, Anniversary and Serenity. That stuff is really great, great music.

Sure, the bossa things are OK too, but no way near the other records mentioned i my opinion.

I was always more familiar with his bossa stuff. But it was his recording with Dizzy and his record with Oscar Peterson that I really started to get into his playing, and started to sway me his way in the whole Coltrane Getz debate. I sometime wonder if we would be talking more about him then Coltrane if Getz would have took his music more the the same directiont that Coltrane took his. But he's an amazing player and I need to get more of his stuff.

Stan Getz and J.J johnson at the opera house.

Jazz Samba

The Lyrical Stan Getz-this album isn't on itunes but i highly recommend you look for/buy it. Two songs are done with Chick Corea. one song with J.J Johnson and two other songs that are also great

I heard this for the first time the other day on KCSM. Fantastic Funny Valentine.
I have to admit that I love "The Best of Two Worlds" not the best Getz but the music is great and many of the tunes are now standards.

I liked the stuff with Jim McNeely and with Chick Corea. I also thought his Concord albums and later Verve albums were amazing (Anniversary, Serenity)
