Just for fun, and knowledge, what is your favorite neck and sax combination. I know possibilities are many, just picked some I think might be interesting to hear about. I only had space for current production Selmers. Sorry for the typos.

Mine is a Sterling Silver Series III neck on a Series II saxophone.

Absolutely. Just found that some of us like to experiment with them. And might like the results.
Selmer is like the leader of the industry, aren't they? They make some of the best saxophones in the world and have been doing so for nearly a century. You would think they'd come with a proper neck.

I am using a Gloger solid silver neck on my Selmer MVI to low A baritone. I have the original MK VI neck, a Selmer Series III baritone neck. The Gloger, for me, is superior. Karsten Gloger is in the process of making a solid silver neck with MKVI geometry/curvature for my MKVII tenor. My MkVI tenor retains its original Selmer neck and is perfect for my purposes.

I have owned three Selmer tenors, and found that each performed best with its own neck.

I agree with Dr. G. I most enjoyed the original Selmer Serie III neck on the Selmer Serie III and the Reference 54 neck on the Reference 54 (The only horn that didn't do best with its own neck for me is my current Yamaha 82Z II).

Hmm, so what is the standard neck for the 82Z II? I have a YTS-875EX and that came with a G-3 neck. I found it had too much resistance so I purchased a G-1 and that made the horn more free blowing. The only Selmer's I've ever owned were and SBA tenor and a Largebore alto, and I never thought either of them needed a different neck.

I love the YTS-875EX--great horn; it was a tough choice between the two horns--I wanted both. The V1 neck is currently the standard neck. It's allegedly the most free blowing neck Yamaha makes these days. But I think we're on opposite ends of the resistance spectrum. I love resistance and focus, so I bought the C1 neck, which Yamaha claims is modeled off the original 62 neck and is the most resistant and focused neck they make.

Some time ago I purchased a Selmer sterling silver neck for my Ref 36 tenor. Meh, it was brighter and felt like it took away some of the "weight" of the tone so I sold it (got my initial investment back) and went back to my original neck. The buyer, as I recall, had a Ref 54 tenor and he said it opened up his sound. So a win-win for both of us.

One of my mentors got a KB (Kim Bock) neck for his Mark VI, because his original neck was corroding around a patch that replaced an old mic pick-up from decades ago. He played some tone comparisons and, like any top-flight player, his tone was pretty much same across the necks unless you knew his personal sound from a lot of listening. His original Mark VI neck was great, but the KB neck added a little focus and I liked it a little better. Out of necessity, he is playing the KB neck and it sounds great on his Mark VI.

I guess that for a while, when no Reference were available and somebody needed a new neck and could not find a good MVI neck around, maybe Series II or Series III necks were used. I always liked original necks, until I tried a Series III on a Reference Alto and I liked it a lot. Then, tried the same Series III neck on a Series II and really liked it, too.

I still do not know if the Sterling Silver has anything to do with it, or just the different design. I still like the Series II neck on its Series II saxophone.

I have used a Yanagisawa solid silver neck on my 1956 Mark VI silver plated Alto for the last 10 years. I keep the original in the sax's hard box case so that it doesn't get mislaid.

I don't remember the difference between the two necks now, I'll compare the two next time I blow the Alto.

Mark VI Low Bb 1964, stock neck.

I made some recordings. Used a new Series II original neck on my Series II. Wow. Now I have a fierce competition between setups.

In the earliest days of SotW, I bought a sterling silver thinwall Serie II neck to try on my Serie III tenor (before the Ref 36 came out). It was unplayable due to intonation issues - some adjacent notes would swing from +30 cents to -40 cents. I recall switching back and forth between the two several times, as I was amazed at how bad it could be.

I still wonder why Series III neck makes more sense (at least to me) on a Series II than a Series III with its original neck. I have read it is a popular combination. Do not know if it because some players buy a Series II and it is easier to change a neck than a complete saxophone, and works as an improvement toward some. I prefer the Series II with its own neck than the Series III with its own neck. I just do not know if the combination of the full ribbed body, the different design they might have plus the difference of the Series III neck gives on the combination more of that sound I look for....

Any technical data that may want to share? I know many think the material has nothing to do, but my neck is Solid Sterling Silver one. And I guess it has to do... maybe just because it had to be made by hand completely, I guess..
