Truly bummed about this. I got to hear him a lot live in NY. Me and a few others followed him to the few gigs he did and got him to play sessions a few times. It always bugged me that there were a lot lesser players would be working and he wasn’t. I guess that was the reason for the move to Italy.
One night he was playing at a little neighborhood bar in Brooklyn with some friends of mine called Brown’s, and after he’d had a few, he bugged me to play his horn. I still have a bootleg of that night.
He was an inspiration to me. He always played with intensity and you never knew what would come out in his playing.
Of all the great tenor players around at his time I always felt he was the only one who really knew Bebop. He was never as pattern oriented as the others.
I’d always hoped I’d get to hear him one more time.

This is a tough way to start the week - I spent a solid two years transcribing a bunch of Grossman solos when I was in grad school, hoping that just a tiny piece of his playing would help inspire my own. That was over 10 years ago and I'm still hoping to pick up even 1% of the beauty that came through his horn.

I'll be listening to his recordings all week - I've got just about everything, but the Do It album from 1991 has been in heavy rotation for me since I first heard it and has been one of the most influential single albums for my playing over the years.

What a loss! Steve was the player I definitely listened most to for the last decade, to me he was playing in the same league as Bird and Trane!
Has anyone here some more info on him about the last months or years since his return to the US?

RIP

as a Miles fan, nothing but the highest regards for his work on Jack Johnson, Bitches Brew, Big Fun, Get Up with It, and all those great live performances, especially that amazing week at the Cellar Door.
