Hello All,

I am researching my next bari sax mouthpiece purchase and came across one that shows a 28mm facing length. I have only ever seen facing lengths listed as short/medium/long, so I have no idea where 28mm falls on the baritone range. I have search ALOT online and seem to only find tip opening measurements. Anyone have a chart (specifically for bari would be nice) or have on hand knowledge of what 28mm would be? Even if I find a vandoren chart with the mm listed, I can cross reference because their website is good about telling you what is long/medium/short. So if i know that their medium faced mouthpiece is 29mm, for example, i can make a good guess from there.

thanks

John

28mm translates to what refacers would call 56 which I think is probably in the "normal" medium range. Typically most players like tenor pieces around 50 (like 48-52) so 56 for a bari piece it seems reasonable.

What difference does the number of mm make? Find a mouthpiece that plays well for you and buy it. There are too many variables including reed strength and chamber size to make a decision based on a spreadsheet.

because I would like the specifications of something before i buy it? someone here might know what 28mm translates to, and I would like that information also, so I asked...

I recently got to take a lot at an old Vandoren catalogue. Unfortunately, I cannot find it again. Back then, they had all their facing lengths indicated in there in mm. This way, one could map the values that correspond to what they nowadays put down as S, MS, M, ML, and L.
