A friend loaned me a Dave Koz CD ("At the Movies") and his playing is just so predictable. But what stands out to me are the ornamentations and the swells in dynamics. They are so formulated that his playing on this CD is actually a caricature of himself.
I know the legacy of the great R&B players, through Dave Sanborn and onto his clones so I'm not asking about the lineage. I just want to know at what point did these smooth jazz guys start sounding the same regarding the cliched use of ornaments and swells in their playing. A point in time.
(ps this is not a diss Koz thread)
