Hi. So i've played alto for a while, and I just got a tenor (a vintage martin, which i'm very happy with :)), so I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions for interesting pieces of music to try out.

I already play the alto (i've done my grade 8), and I was looking for pieces which might be a bit of a challenge.

So are there any pieces of music you think are essential for any tenor player to be able to play?

Or anything you've found interesting to play in the past?

Jazz, classical, or anything really. I'm open to any suggestions!

Thanks!

thisisdom, your request is too general. You need to give us more information. There are tons of music scores (e.g., transcriptions) for tenor that you can find for free on the internet. Anyone can basically recommend something that he or she liked, but people's musical tastes and ability levels will be so different that in the end the advice may not be that useful.

Fantasia for Bb Saxophone by Villa-Lobos is an excellent, yet challenging piece for tenor (or soprano). It's not that technically difficult, although there are several tough runs, but playing it with the correct musicality is very difficult.
If you're looking for something INSANELY hard, then try Hard, by Christian Lauba.

The 'most essential' tunes are thos that your band or audience is requesting that you play.

I wouldn't think many people would consider that as jazz though
