It's often said he played a Brilhart. Tonalin or HR Personaline.
Not sure about tip opening or facing length.

I think during the Mingus years he played a selmer D. I don't know if it was stock or refaced though.

Whatever he was playing, wow. He could really cut through anything (in a good way) with that sound.

I'd actually think you could get a similar tone with a beechler diamond inlay, although sounds like he may have used something else.
